Renowned Native Plants Expert to talk in Kilcoy!
Did you know the lilly pilly in your back yard attracts native birds and butterflies AND you can make delicious jams and jellies from its fruit? Would you like to learn about other edible plants you can easily grow in your garden – plants Indigenous Australians have been eating for tens of thousands of years?
Then come to a presentation by renowned landscape architect and Native Plants Queensland member Lawrie Smith AM. He’ll present on ‘Bush Tucker and Other Useful Plants’ . Hosted by Brisbane Valley Landcare, this special event is being held on Saturday July 9, 9.30 am – 12.00 midday at the Kilcoy Explore (Information) Centre.
To cover costs, a $5.00 donation (or whatever you can afford) is requested on arrival. Light refreshments, featuring bush tucker ingredients, will be served.
Lawrie Smith has been involved in creating many of our most beloved public gardens and green spaces. From Expo 88 and the Roma Street Parklands to botanic gardens on the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Cairns, Townsville, Bundaberg, Darwin and numerous other places, Lawrie has expertly showcased Australia’s unique flora to the world. As he says, ‘my main passion remains to teach people that native plants belong in our cities and in our towns as much as they belong in the bush’.
With teaching others as his guiding principle, and calling on his vast knowledge and experience, Lawrie will take us on an eye-opening journey into the world of edible native plants. Using a comprehensive power point display, Lawrie will be happy to answer your questions about the best edible native plants to grow in your garden.
Lawrie will also talk about the best place to grow plants and how to look after them. You’ll learn how to use and prepare plants to eat, as well as garden design, garden microclimates and unusual and useful native plants.
If you are interested in using native plants in your garden to provide food for you and your family, and food, habitat and shelter for native wildlife, then Landcare would love to see you at Lawrie’s ‘Bush Tucker and Other Useful Plants’ presentation.
